Overview
Made in L.A. is the Hammer Museum’s acclaimed biennial exhibition showcasing artists living and working in the Los Angeles region. As part of the identity process, an artist’s work was selected as the key image to represent the overall ethos of each show.
For the 2016 edition, the chosen image was a found painting unearthed during the Luxor Hotel renovations, reappropriated by artist Daniel Small for his installation Excavation II. In 2018, the identity featured a still from Neha Choksi’s video The Weather Inside Me, depicting a hand holding a burning photo of a sunset.
The exhibition identities, refreshed for each edition, extended across a wide range of applications, including advertisements, marketing materials, branding for films, merchandise, and four-color screen-printed posters. All work was produced by the in-house team.
2018
Visual Identity
The fourth iteration of the biennial in 2018 featured 32 artists that ranged in age from 29 to 97 and have contributed works that are deeply engaged with vital aspects of our contemporary culture.
The identity for the exhibition used Gill Sans Bold Extra Condensed for the title lockup, contrasted with ITC Avant Garde Gothic for longer passages of text.
2016
Visual Identity
Made in L.A. 2016: a, the, though, only is the third iteration of the Hammer’s biennial exhibition presents a variety of work, including surveys, multiyear projects, new commissions, and pieces from disciplines such as dance, fashion, literature, music, and film. The artist and poet Aram Saroyan provided a subtitle for the exhibition “a, the, though, only.”
The typography was closely linked to exhibition catalogue, and was either floated over a pale ochre field or combined with an image from Daniel R. Small's project Excavation II.
